About this drink
The name is 1920s slang for something first-rate. The story that honey and citrus were there to cover rough Prohibition gin is often repeated and hard to verify. The earliest printed recipes are gin, honey and lemon alone; the splash of orange juice used here comes from David Embury's The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks of 1948.
