Method
Fill a tall glass with ice, build the tequila and orange juice and stir. Pour the grenadine slowly down the inside of the glass so it sinks and forms the gradient, then leave it unstirred.
About this drink
The version drunk today is generally traced to a bar in Sausalito, California, around 1970, and spread after a rock band carried it across America on tour in 1972. An earlier Arizona drink of the same name was something else entirely. The sinking grenadine is the sunrise.
