Method

Stir the whiskey, sweet red vermouth and bitters with ice until cold, strain into a chilled coupe and drop in a cherry.

About this drink

It was already on record in New York in the 1880s. The popular tale of a banquet at the Manhattan Club does not fit the dates and is generally doubted. Whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters became the frame for countless later drinks.
