About this drink

New Orleans, mid-nineteenth century. The drink takes its name from a cognac imported at the time; when phylloxera cut the supply of French brandy, American bartenders rebuilt it on rye, and both versions survive. Louisiana made it the official cocktail of New Orleans in 2008.
